Recently, I came across a national campaign that impressed me both from a message standpoint and a marketing standpoint. Unscrew America is a collaboration which seeks to encourage people everywhere to save money, reduce energy usage, and foster independence from fossil fuels by replacing old, incandescent bulbs with CFL's and LED's. Believe it or not, there are actually people out there who discourage the use of these bulbs. These people claim CFL's are harmful because they contain trace amounts of mercury, however, organizations like Earth911 have solved this problem by helping people locate recycling depositories in their surrounding area.
Besides the few on the fringe who will find an excuse to oppose any manner of environmental stewardship, many people are now using light bulbs as they wade into a more eco-friendly lifestyle. "Unscrew America is made up of everyone who helps spread the word about energy efficient lighting," declares their ridiculously sweet interactive website.
So check them out, let me know what you think and please consider replacing your bulbs if you haven't done so already. Oh, and make sure you watch the videos--hysterical.

While, I am certainly not an environmental fanatic - I do what I can to save money, time, and my impact on the environment.

Where can I get LED lights? I have some CFL's but don't care for them too much - especially in those areas where I don't have the light on for more than a few minutes. (CFLs are actually darkest when you turn them on and they get brighter as they stay on).

Actually, was really drawn to a link they had for LEDCity. http://www.ledcity.org A really cool program and partnership introducing LED technology to governments.Check that site out as well. In fact... forward a link on to you local government officials about how they can use LED technology where you live.

The US Dept of Energy is doing a pretty good job pushing standards, trials, tests, and reporting on progress of LED lighting. Right now they have a contest out called L-Prize that is looking for a product that performs well with the intention of replacing the good old common light bulb.
There is stuff available now, good and bad.... it is Buyer Beware, but there is some good info here

So far - everything I find will cost me in excess of $20 for one bulb...and honestly, I just can't do that right now.
